Finding Hera is a feminist photomontage project depicted in allegories that emphasise the female identity in ancient and modern societies. The project uses subtle and minimalist collage layered on solid, vivid blocks of acrylic paint to create a contemporary aesthetic. The bright palette of colours is allegorical, drawing from cultural references and the artist’s homeland in Georgetown, Guyana.
“I have taken the female artefact from a patriarchal perspective and context, and reconstruct her through my gaze, a female gaze. Female characters of the past are presented in a different context where their identities are that of heroes and conquerors who overcame adversary with resilience and strength”.
